  2. California Senate urges 34th Match in San Francisco
    34th America's Cup » News | 19 Aug 2010 | 7:52pm GMT

Eyeing an economic windfall in the billions of dollars, the Senate of the State of California issued on Tuesday a resolution urging organizers for the 34th America’s Cup to designate San Francisco as the host venue.

The resolution, SCR 124, also urges the State of California to support San Francisco’s bid to host the 34th America’s Cup Match. The resolution supports the formation of a single face of state government for the purpose of securing state permits for the America’s Cup in San Francisco.

San Francisco is one of three front runners amongst five venues vying to host the 34th Match in either 2013 or 2014. Other venues in Italy and Spain are also under active consideration.

The City of San Francisco commissioned a study by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute and Beacon Economics that forecast an infusion of $1.4 billion (1.088 billion Euros) in the Bay Area’s economy and the creation of 8,800 jobs, from prep cooks to engineers.

The study also estimated a total infusion of $1.9 billion (1.47 billion Euros) in the state’s economy and 12,000 jobs statewide.

An older study released in 2007 from international insurance group Allianz predicted an infusion of $9.9 billion (7.6 billion Euros). That study also included about $4.5 billion in future tourism and tech investment after the conclusion of the racing. Future benefits are not predicted in the more recent study from the Bay Area council.

Although none of the three front runners has a clear advantage at this stage San Francisco holds place of prominence for BMW ORACLE Racing founder Larry Ellison, who would like to host the event on his home waters.

“We feel that San Francisco would be wonderful as a natural amphitheater to stage the racing for the America’s Cup,” said Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing which won the America’s Cup in February. “But all three venues being vetted have their own unique advantages, and we are weighing the benefits of each in our selection process.”

BMW ORACLE Racing won the right to determine the next venue for the America’s Cup when it won the 33rd Match last February against Alinghi, 2-0, off the coast of Valencia, Spain.

  4. Discussion and dialogue with potential teams in Cowes
    34th America's Cup » News | 5 Aug 2010 | 7:27pm GMT

Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing, came to Cowes, birthplace of the America’s Cup, to update potential teams about plans for the 34th America’s Cup, scheduled for 2013 or 2014.

He met skippers, sponsors and team owners competing in the Extreme Sailing Series for 40-foot catamarans.

“Since winning the 33rd America’s Cup in February we have had ongoing dialogue with interested parties,” commented Coutts.

Independent rule writers are currently simultaneously creating a new class of monohull and multihull boats. Though different in type, the two concepts share common characteristics: high speed and capability across the wind range; 22 meters overall length; logistical simplicity; and designed from the outset to incorporate innovative camera, audio and data systems to generate the best-ever television of America’s Cup racing.

Coutts’ briefing to the multihull meeting was warmly welcomed. “The multihull sailors, designers and team owners have a voice in this debate. So do the commercial partners and the venue candidates. And so does television. That’s why we are talking and listening,” he added.

Asked if the monohull or multihull choice would affect the number of teams in the next Cup, Coutts said, “I think there are solid potential teams who are intent on excelling no matter what type of boat is raced. The question is which choice will result in the best America’s Cup? That is why we are holding these workshops with both monohull and multihull stakeholders.”

    Key dates:
Protocol rule: published by August 31
Design rules: published by September 30
Venue & Year: confirmed by December 31
    Challenges accepted: October 1 – January 31, 2011

  5. America’s Cup media trials Web site launched
    34th America's Cup » News | 29 Jul 2010 | 9:54am GMT

Following on the heels of Sunday’s conclusion of four days of highly successful America’s Cup media trials, a new web site has been launched – www.acmediaevaluation.com – where all the clips have been posted and comments are welcome.

The media trials were geared to examine every aspect of America’s Cup racing, including the type of boat (monohull or multihull), the format of the racecourse (upwind, downwind and start sequences) and, importantly, the video output for broadcast and on- line viewing.

The AC Media Evaluation sessions will continue in August

“We launched this site because we generated so much material that we needed to consolidate edited highlights in one place,” said BMW ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts. “We welcome sailors and non-sailors alike to offer comments and feedback.”

More than 150 hours of video requiring 10 terabytes of memory was captured in the trials, which used a pair of BMW ORACLE Racing’s RC 44 high-performance monohulls and X40 catamarans.

Another two rounds of trials are planned for next month and later in the fall, where additional layers of features will be included.

Next month, positioning, performance and biometric data will be experimented with during the 1851 Cup in Cowes, England, followed by proof of concept technology trials in October. The trials are necessary because many of the cameras, microphones and data systems will have to be custom designed and built, employing specialized housings and mounts.
